CHARACTER INFORMATIONCharacter Name: Mason Verger
Age: Early to mid-30’s
Canon: Hannibal (NBC)
Canon Point: Episode 2x12: Tome-wan - just after Hannibal has administered his hallucinogen cocktail and just before very bad things happen to his face
Character Information: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mason_Verger_%28character%29Personality:Mason Verger is, for all intents and purposes, a playground bully masquerading as a responsible adult. He relishes other people’s pain. He enjoys making children cry. He likes to make his sister suffer. He is petty and vindictive, and underneath it all, pitiful and insecure.
Mason often talks about his father, reminiscing fondly about all the things Papa taught him - the ins and outs of the meat packing business, how to test the depths of a pig’s fat by stabbing it with a knife, how to hide things... He looked up to his father, to the extent that he’s taken on an almost mythological status. Much of what he does now, Mason does in an effort to live up to his father’s legacy, to make Papa proud.
Papa was a ruthless businessman. Mason is ruthless too. His first big project was breeding and training pigs that would eat a man alive. And when Will Graham impregnated his sister, he threatened to put them to use. When Will pointed the finger at Hannibal as the one orchestrating events, he tried to feed the good doctor to the pigs instead.
Mason has no qualms about killing anyone. He may not have actually done it before, but it wouldn’t bother him. Nothing much bothers Mason. If ever there was a conscience to plague him, it has long since shriveled and died.
He isn’t just
willing to hurt people who get in his way, though. He
enjoys it. Hurting people is a hobby. And he’ll hurt them any way he can. He’s left Margot with quite a collection of scars from trying out Papa’s little knife trick, to see how thick her skin is. He’s also raped her, emotionally abused her, and used her for his own sick pleasure, whatever form it happened to take.
Margot has always been his favorite target, but he also “took advantage” of underprivileged children at a summer camp his father funded. That got him into some hot water, but his wealth and influence helped him get off with just a slap on the wrist. Rather than feeling even remotely guilty for his despicable acts, he seems almost proud to have gotten away with it.
He’s as arrogant as he is sadistic. One could argue that he suffers from delusions of grandeur. He doesn’t lie in bed and think, he
composes, “like the deaf Beethoven.” Papa was a genius, and obviously Mason has inherited that genius, along with everything else. And he uses that “genius” to typically horrid ends. When Margot plots to get out from under his tyrannical rule by giving birth to a male heir - the only way she can escape the clause in Papa’s will that will leave her destitute should anything happen to Mason - he uses all of his corrupt cunning and considerable resources to find a surgeon willing to remove the “temptation” her uterus presents.
Beneath all these layers, two things lie at Mason’s core: a terrible fear of inadequacy and an obsession with power. Much of his behavior - his arrogance, his cruelty, his almost theatrical sadism - is a carefully conducted performance to cover that fear. Fear is synonymous with weakness. Power, on the other hand, is the
opposite of weakness. And so, Mason has carefully cultivated power within himself. That’s what it’s really all about. Making children cry, making Margot suffer - it’s all about wielding power over those who are weaker than he is.
